Tidal Park Keilehavenk
The Keilehaven basin has been transformed from a rocky, industrial area into a tidal park that allows the natural ebb and flow of the water to return. This transformation is part of the broader redevelopment of the Merwe-Vierhavens area from an industrial port into a vibrant urban space. This redevelopment requires significant adjustments to the public environment. The old stone quays, once used for loading and unloading cargo, are being replaced by green zones.
The tidal park is designed to reconnect people with the water and enhance local biodiversity. It features nine tidal terraces, each at a different height, creating a range of microhabitats. These terraces are regularly submerged during high tide, providing shelter for various plant and animal species. Organisms adapted to brackish water conditions (such as specific plants, fish, and bird species) now find an ideal habitat here.
Visitors can access the water via a staircase at the head of the Keilehaven. The dynamic tidal environment attracts many species: birds such as spoonbills and common terns, and fish including eels and three-spined sticklebacks, have found a new home in the park. Beneath the surface, two storm-felled trees have been placed to mimic the natural river system, offering shelter and restoring aquatic habitats.
The purpose of the CirCleaner
The CirCleaner in the Keilehaven is our first waste collection system, and is now owned by the Municipality of Rotterdam. It is part of a broader citywide strategy to reduce waste entering the sea and to achieve cleaner waterways. The CirCleaner is fully solar-powered and automatically adjusts its operation to the tides.
Since most plastic debris appears during high-water periods, this system enables energy-efficient and sustainable waste collection. With this installation, Noria Sustainable Innovators marks an important step from research and development to commercial deployment, aiming to install more systems across the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond.
Our mission is to support governments and organizations in tackling plastic pollution in a sustainable, data-driven, and cost-effective way.
