The AI-Cam: Making Plastic Pollution Visible
Every water manager knows the situation: plastic waste floating through waterways, varying in type and quantity depending on wind, season, and other factors. It is clear we have a plastic pollution problem, but how big is it, and where and when is intervention most cost-effective?
To accurately visualize macroplastic pollution in waterways, Noria has developed the AI-Cam: a smart camera-based monitoring system powered by AI. Together with the client, we first determine the most strategic locations for installing the cameras, typically at structures such as bridges, locks, or pumping stations. The duration of monitoring and image-capture frequency are also tailored to the client’s needs.
Counting and categorizing
The camera footage is analysed using artificial intelligence, which identifies how much and what types of litter pass by or remain in a given location each day. When combined with GPS tracking by Noria, this analysis provides even deeper insight into how and where plastic moves.
All collected data are uploaded to the Obscsape Portal, an interactive dashboard that offers clients a clear and up-to-date overview of the situation within their management area and the analyses performed. This dashboard is currently under development.
