Innovative Solution for Plastic-Free European River

INSPIRE’s main objective is to contribute to the drastic reduction of litter, macro and microplastics in European rivers in a holistic approach by bringing together 20 technologies and actions for: 

DETECTION of the pollution present in the river and at the riverbank,

COLLECTION of litter and macroplastics at the river bank and litter, macro and microplastics in the river,

PREVENTION of litter, macro and microplastics to enter the river by collecting it from its waste stream before it can enter the river and by developing biodegradable alternatives for currently non-degradable polluting products, to avoid they will further be used and arrive in the river as litter.

Six use case are defined in INSPIRE to install and test the technologies and actions, to model the processes related to the water purification activities, to obtain 7 well defined solutions at detection, collection or prevention level and combinations thereof.

Goal for Noria

Noria will use and optimization of CirCleaner in combination with citizen science activities for removal of plastic litter like industrial waste, consumer waste, and pellets.
The CirCleaner technology will be deployed in consultation with the local authorities in the Rhine river in Rotterdam at a location that is considered a hotspot of pollution based on the baseline pollution levels (T1.5). The Circleaner collects mixed litter in the meso- and macro-size range, from 5 mm to 1 m and is to be used in combination with manual citizen science riverbank clean ups in Rotterdam. As such, a combination of two removal strategies, being the CirCleaner (NOR) and manual river clean up (RCU) will be implemented. It will be assessed to what extend the combination of both strategies is suitable for reducing pellet pollution (size range 2 mm - 3 mm), and engineering solutions will be sought iteratively to improve the retention efficiency.
